Please meet the beautiful and sweet Miss Oakley...

Next Adoption Event:  VGSR Rescue Event - Bristow (Manassas) - July 3, 2021

Overview:  Miss Oakley is a beautiful young lady with great form and coloring. Plus she loves her people. She enjoys running around in the yard but wants her person with her. She has recently discovered what a squeaky toy is and enjoys playing with her new stuffed opossum.

  • Car - She jumps right in, is excited and moves around quite a bit at first but then settles in for the ride. She will let you know if someone is approaching the car.
  • Crate - She complains for about 5-10 minutes but then will settle down. No damage to crate or surrounding objects - just vocal.
  • Housebroken - Yes, amazingly so.  Whenever outside she takes advantage. She will go multiple times each time she is out. Make sure to have a couple extra baggies with you.
  • Training - She is a smart girl and will learn quickly. She knows sit and down but will need more training by her new family. She is treat motivated so that will help.
  • Dogs - She wants to be top dog, so likely best no dog or one very submissive, definitely no small dogs. She will push the top dog issue if allowed. She is a bit dog reactive and the adopter would need to continue working with her on this. She is doing much better since we started correction. May simply have never been exposed to different dogs while young.
  • Cats - She does quite well with ours (we have seven, all with different personalities). She likes to follow then and sniff them. She will nose them if allowed. S he understands the hiss and the paw swat.
  • Kids - She did well with some kids at the Dogs in the park event on 6/16. Liked lots of hands/arms. Kids would need to be respectful of her. She is mouthy but nothing hard. When running around she avoids running into people, but might need to watch out for little ones.
  • Toys - Not overly interested in them. She will briefly chase a ball and make her opossum squeak. She does not try to shred any stuffed item and will allow you to take her toy away. No guarding. Although if you chased her for it, she'd be ok with that.
  • Exercise - Pretty straight forward and easy. A couple nice long walks walks and playtime in the yard. Remember she will want you with her so plan accordingly.

6/14/2021 -  Oakley's eye is healing wonderfully.  Can barely tell there was any issues and s he is back to her normal self. She participated in Saturday's adoption event in Fredericksburg and did quite well.  We went inside and she picked a toy - a squeaky opossum. She loves it and bounces like a little puppy when she plays with it. Check out the video of her running around with the squeaky toy - last on in the series of videos.  She is a happy girl and has bonded well. She is always wanting to know where I am and if she looses sight of me in the yard - she'll come running to find me. She definitely wants to be the top dog so any home she goes to would need a submissive pup or no dog. Cats  have not been an issue. She seems fascinated by them. Loves to watch,  tries to sniff and if the run around she'll get up and lope after a bit but a quick call back and she is good. No real prey drive to talk about .  She walks nice and loose on her leash but you do need to watch for surprise items. We had a couple bikes today and that definitely peaked her interest but no lunging or barking. a couple corrections and she was fine. The adult and child stopped and she happily took attention and fully sniffed the bikes.

6/11/2021 - Good news - she has recovered just fine from her spay. Unfortunately, Miss Oakley injured her eye so she had to visit an ophthalmologist yesterday. Good news is she didn't need surgery and has been placed on some meds to make sure it doesn't get infected.  The eye already looks much better this morning. She is needing to wear a hard cone again, so no - she isn't happy about it but has accepted it.  We want to see how she does over the next couple days and should go back to the ophthalmologist in 2-3 weeks for a follow-up. Miss Oakley did bark quite loudly in the car when the vet techs came up to the car to get her. But as soon as she was able to meet them she was all wags.  She went with them willingly and did quite well inside.

6/4/2021 - Well things have finally calmed in the house a bit. Our senior dog and Oakley have come to terms and Miss Oakley has realized she isn't in charge, our old girl is. The pack is now much calmer and seems to be getting along.  As for Miss Oakley, she is definitely house trained, crate trained, walks well on a leash but could use more work, and has a nice respect for our kitties. That said, most of our kitties are very cautious around her but a couple that walk right around her and have gone nose to nose. She understands what a hiss means. Miss Oakley likes to run in the yard but more like a lope than an actual run. She's not much interested in balls or toys so some nice long walks would likely be what gets her energy out.  I also haven't seen a crazy prey drive so that is a positive too.  In the house she has been pretty good - just gotta watch that tail!  Much to her disappointment, she is learning the couch is not hers.  Now she just puts her front paws on it so she can get some better rubs and scratches. On day one she had barked and lunged at a couple folks when out but with some correction and positive reinforcement when she calmed, she has been doing much better.  Has even let the UPS guy come up to her without an issue. No reactions to thunder, vehicles, or other odd sounds so far but more odd situations still to come. I am very pleased with her progress in just a couple days. Added a couple more photos and a video too. Note: she is still on happy pills from her surgery ;-)

6/2/2021 - Everyone, please meet the wonderful Miss Oakley. She just arrived in our home late last night so not much information yet.  Also, you'll notice the little blue balloon/ring around her neck - well she was just spayed and is recovering. She understands sit and no but she considers it before complying and doesn't hold it for very long. She does pretty well on the leash and is treat driven so that will help with training. She seems to want to be top dog in the house but has been human submissive. She is very interested in the cats but not in a "ah, there is lunch" type way. For now I say she has potential for now, she is staying on the leash or in her kennel - no free roam.   We'll add more as we get to know her better.
