Clarence is a senior guy, 8 years old and is a wonderful companion. He follows me everywhere and has become a Velcro. I believe he has lived with people before he was picked up as a stray in January. There is a gentleness about him, too, and he also knows several commands, such as sit, shake, come, down. I don’t think he has a mean bone in his body and is very good with my little terrier mix.
He has spent several days with my 7 year old grandson and was a dream with him. He had his first visit to a dog park where he spent his time exploring the perimeter. When dogs came to meet him, he sniffed appropriately and then continued on his way. He's a lover, not a fighter! Clarence has completed his first obedience class and did great! He is smart and will do anything for food. He does not like being in a crate, but I’m not sure if it’s because he doesn’t like to be confined or because he just wants to be with his people. Clarence sleeps with us at night without any problems, and he now has free reign in the house. He does not appear to know how to play. Yet, occasionally he and my terrier engage in play, first with the play bow and then chasing each other around the house. Otherwise, he either does not know, or is not interested in, playing, catching, or fetching balls and does not know what to do with toys. Clarence walks beautifully on a leash and is very well mannered when we meet other people, which is another reason I believe he’s had people experience. He was a bit nervous at his first adoption event with the other dogs, but enjoyed the attention of the people and is now an attention-getter at our events. He is also a very talkative dog, especially at mealtime and walk time. I obviously don’t move fast enough for him! He seems hungry all the time so he needs supervision in the kitchen because he’s big enough to surf the counters. And, we're working on appropriate behavior at the dining room table. All in all, Clarence is a wonderful dog who has fit into our routine very well. There are lots of new things to get used to, but Clarence’s laid back attitude and curiosity enables him to take just about everything in stride.
